Diarrhea is a common problem that usually goes away on its own in a day or two. Diarrhea lasting longer than three days can be a sign of a more serious problem, and you should consult a doctor.
Dehydration is the primary concern when you have diarrhea. To help ensure that you do not become dehydrated, it is imperative that you take small, frequent sips of water, or an electrolyte drink. Taking this will some crackers or toast will help it absorb into your body better.
Once your diarrhea seems to have gone away, slowly reintroduce foods into your diet. Most physicians recommend the BART diet for the next day or two – Bananas, applesauce, rice and toast. These sit relatively well and are the least likely to trigger another attack of diarrhea.
You should avoid spicy foods, fruits (other than bananas), alcohol and caffeine for at least two days after the diarrhea has passed. Chewing gum containing sorbitol can also aggravate diarrhea and should be avoided during this period. Milk and dairy products are also known to aggravate this condition. For that reason, you should avoid them totally for a couple of days.
Raspberry-leaf tea is a popular folk remedy for children and adults. Combine 1 ounce of dried raspberry leaves with 2 cups of water (a piece of cinnamon stick is optional), and simmer in an enamel or glass saucepan for 25 minutes. Strain, cool and drink throughout the day.
Blackberry juice or wine will also help you feel better. Scrape a peeled apple with a spoon and eat the scrapings. In fact, eat no other food but grated apple until the condition greatly subsides.
