Treating dry eyes with Natural Homemade Remedies

Each time we blink, a thin sheet of tears covers out eyes. In addition to keeping them moist, the tears serve as protection from foreign substances. But what if your eyes are always dry? Are there any natural remedies you can try? Of course there are! Many things can cause dry eyes – from cold medicines and high blood pressure medicines, allergies, winter or beach winds, menopause- or, no reason at all!

Doctors recommend placing a warm washcloth over your closed eyes for ten minutes several times a day. Doing this will help open the clogged oil glands and help produce tears. Using a compress is especially helpful if you have "crusty" eyes when you wake up or at other times of the day.

Over the counter eye drops are another good option. You will likely have to try several kinds before you find the right type for you – thicker products last longer, but can cause residue on your eyelids and sometimes slightly blurry vision when you first apply them. Thinner products do not have those effects, but need to be reapplied several times a day.

Other helpful tips are turning your heating and air conditioning vents away from the places where you sit and sleep. This includes car vents!

Use a humidifier in your home, and especially your bedroom! When there is little moisture in the air, your eyes dry out quicker! Keeping the air moist will help them retain their moisture. Also, don’t use a hair dryer if you can avoid it – the hot dry air dries out more than your hair!
